In a world where the bond between a father and his daughter shapes destinies, there lies a timeless truth: a father’s love is irreplaceable. It’s a love that builds resilience, fosters self-worth, and creates a foundation for life-long confidence.

This story isn’t just about any father, it’s about the legendary Nigerian musician and actress, Onyeka Onwenu, and the unbreakable bond she shared with her father, a man who left an indelible mark on her life despite his early passing.

Join me as we explore the profound impact a father’s love can have, even from beyond the grave, and discover why being “My Father’s Daughter” is a badge of honor that resonates through generations.

I was listening to an interview with Onyeka Onwenu. She spoke about being loved by the first man in her life, the person who mattered most to her. She shared how growing up with a sense of resilience and self-worth, instilled by this man, has stayed with her even into her 70s.

The person who loved her deeply and whom she, in turn, loved the most by upholding his name. She humorously mentioned that you can say anything about her, and she won’t care, but if you touch the person who gave her that deep love, she’d go to any length to protect him.

Who was she referring to? Her FATHER. Remarkably, this is the same father who passed away when she was only four years old. This emphasizes the profound impact a father can have on his daughter.

Onyeka’s father died at the young age of 40, yet within a brief period, he left an indelible mark on her. This demonstrates the power of being an intentional father, one who forges a strong connection with his daughter from the very beginning. Fatherhood is about sacrifice, responsibility, and being an influencer. It means ensuring that you raise your daughter holistically, with a focus on her overall well-being.

Fatherhood goes beyond biological ties. Any male figure in your daughter’s life, such as uncles, grandfathers, pastors, drivers, and men in the community, can also influence her. Your daughter observes how these men treat other women and their wives.

However, as her biological father, you are her primary caregiver and the first societal unit she belongs to. This means the core values of fatherhood, respect, relationship, and responsibility are embedded in your daughter’s memories. She watches not only what you do but how you do it. Therefore, it’s crucial to explain why you respect women, as this sets a standard for her future choices in men.

Here is a research-backed insight that underscores the importance of a father’s emotional presence in his daughter’s life by Linda Neilson, a professor of psychology at Wake Forest University and an expert in father-daughter relationships, it states, “An emotionally absent father can have a damaging effect on his daughter’s love life.” She adds, “The daughter who has a fulfilling relationship with her father is usually more trusting, more secure, and more satisfied in her romantic relationships than the daughter with a troubled or distant relationship with her dad.”
Regardless of whether parents are married or divorced, women who grow up with meaningful relationships with their dads make better choices in dating, relationships, and marriage.

To ensure you have a lasting, positive impact on your daughter, consider these five ways to support and nurture her.

  • Be Present
Quality time is invaluable. Make time to be with your daughter, even if it’s just a few minutes each day. The most important thing is your consistency, which is a vital is key.

  • Communicate Openly
Encourage open dialogue. Let her express her thoughts, fears, and dreams. Listen without judgment and offer your support and guidance.

  • Model Respect
Treat women with respect and kindness. Your daughter learns from your actions and will set her standards based on how you treat others.

  • Encourage Her Interests
Support her hobbies and interests. Whether she’s into sports, arts, or sciences, your encouragement can boost her confidence and motivation.

  • Be Her Protector
Make her feel safe. Let her know she can always count on you for protection and support.

Here is my advice  for you “FATHERS”

Dear fathers, your daughter’s self-esteem and self-worth are significantly influenced by you. This is the best  gift you can give her. Your role extends far beyond providing material things; it involves contributing to her emotional, social, cognitive, and overall development.

And also, remember that you have a unique and special voice in your daughter’s life. No one can convey things to her the way you can. Intentionally say “I love you” to her; sending messages alone isn’t enough. Those words need to come directly from your mouth. Remember, your daughter’s first true love is you, the father.

What your daughter will say about you in the future depends on what you do with her today. The truth is, your daughter will know, even in adulthood, whether she had a good dad or a bad dad.  Again, your actions today will shape her tomorrow. Be Intentional.
